Memories are Good for Your Health.

So the summer holidays have come to an end and September beckons. Children up and down the country are returning to school in new, neatly pressed uniforms, excited to start a new term.

Parents from north and south, sit down enjoy a hot coffee in peace for the first time in what seems like months!

Summer holidays have been enjoyed  and memories have been made, memories that in months and years to come you will look back on and smile or laugh. Whether you were holidaying on the British coast, camping in the hills or enjoying a holiday abroad; with family, friends, with or without children or maybe taking solace in a solo trip, memories will have been made.

If you are sitting down, take a moment to remember. Close your eyes if you are able to and imagine the warm sea water around your ankles and the warm summer sun on your skin. Feel the sand between your toes or the sensation of sinking in soft sand . Smell the salt in the air, the aroma of fish and chips and the remember evocative sound of seagulls at the harbour.

You are making a memory. Memories work by imprinting neurological pathways in the brain. Humans and animals develop memories; my dog quivers with excitement and anticipation when she sees a beach, knowing that it means fun and playtime! She does that by using her memory of happy experiences at the beach.

Studies by Southampton University have shown the act of nostalgia, that is looking back at memories, events or listening to music helps you to be more optimistic and less anxious.

Recalling memories and being nostalgic has positive effect on our wellbeing. According to the study people reported feeling in a better mood with a higher level of self esteem and enriched sense of belonging after being nostalgic.

"When engaging in nostalgic reflection, people report a stronger sense of belongingness, affiliation, or sociality; they convey higher continuity between their past and their present; they describe their lives as more meaningful; and they often indicate higher levels of self-esteem and positive mood"

So taking time to occasionally look back and remember is good for us. Having memory triggers around your home. Photographs are an obvious and commonly used aid to trigger memories. I can remember clearly the tin of old photos we had when I was a child. There was always a lot of laughter when the tin of photos came out, it too had a distinctive nostalgic smell that I can recall clearly to this day.

It also common to pick up keepsakes from the beach. Keepsakes that we later use to trigger a memory, an unusual shell or an ordinarily smooth pebble perhaps. A stone that has been eroded into an heart shape or a conch shell that is still beautifully intact.

Children's seaside buckets often make their way home from trips to the seaside containing sand and shells from their adventures on the beach.
